Dental Disease & Your Pet

Periodontal disease, which is what we typically mean when we refer to dental disease, is one of the top maladies affecting cats and dogs. It is extremely easy for pet parents to miss the signs of periodontal disease until the disease has progressed. Regular wellness exams for your pet (we recommend an exam at least annually) can help with early detection of dental disease, which can mean that your pet will be able to avoid the serious health issues that severe periodontal disease can cause.

Warning signs of periodontal disease include:

  • Unusually bad or smelly breath
  • Blood in your pet’s saliva or water dish
  • Difficulty eating
  • Loss of appetite
  • Excessive drooping
  • Loose or missing teeth

Periodontal disease is caused by a build up of plaque bacteria on the teeth. Yes, the same kind of plaque that is found in humans. When the bacteria dies, it forms a hard film on the teeth, which provides more surface area for new plaque to grow on. While humans brush their teeth regularly to get rid of plaque buildup, pets do not have the means to brush their own teeth. There are special toys or treats you can give your pet that can help dislodge plaque buildup, or you can brush your pet’s teeth for them. However, if the plaque is allowed to continue to build up, it can be difficult to remove. At a certain point, the only way to properly clean your pet’s teeth is by a professional. It is also at this stage where plaque buildup can spread below the gumline, where it can cause infections, pain, loose teeth, and, in the worst stages, permanent damage to your pet’s jawbone.
